Playground Games has finally confirmed a runtime to Xbox’s long-in-development Fable reboot, and the figure is tighter than the scale of the project might suggest. The studio’s first original RPG since taking over the Lionhead series is being built as a 2027 open-world campaign with a contained main path, then extra hours in Albion’s side quests and living systems. That approach keeps the new game closer to the old Fable loop than to the bloated checklists common in current RPGs.
Director Will Kennedy outlined the expected runtime in an interview with Polygon. He revealed that the game is expected to last somewhere between 15 and 20 hours on the main story, a figure shorter than what many expected from an Xbox revival that has been in the public eye for years. Kennedy also pointed to another 20 hours or so of side content waiting beyond the central quest line, which should push a typical playthrough well past the main path on its own.
Kennedy broke that split down more precisely during the same conversation. “We have around 15 to 20 hours of mainline quest gameplay, we have around 15 to 20 [hours] of side and open-world exploration content gameplay,” Kennedy explained. “And then, of course, the life systems are limitless, so you can play them for as long as you want.” Those life systems cover the series’ familiar mix of reputation, property, relationships, and other sandbox toys that sit outside the critical path.
Kennedy’s estimates place the new Fable much closer to the original trilogy than to the sprawling RPGs that now dominate storefront charts. The first Fable, Fable 2, and Fable 3 usually wrapped their main stories in about 12 to 20 hours for most players. Extra quests, collectibles, and open-world wandering then stretched those campaigns toward 40 or 50 hours, and Playground appears to be following that same shape rather than chasing a triple-digit checklist.
Xbox first announced Fable in 2020, and that long runway made a gigantic, 75-to-100-hour revival feel like the obvious outcome. The world is still expected to feel large and reactive, yet the confirmed campaign length is leaner than that six-year wait might have implied. What has been shown so far still looks like a carefully built adventure with a strong sense of place, which leaves room for the reboot to land as a high-quality game even if its structured runtime sits below the scale of many contemporary RPGs.
Fable is scheduled to launch on February 23, 2027. The game will arrive on Xbox Series X/S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available day one on Xbox Game Pass.
