Ewan McGregor, who's known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy of films and the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries, will be honored with the 2,789th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a dedication ceremony this Thursday, September 12. It's been more than two years since he played the Jedi Master who was originally played by Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy, and while there are currently no plans for the 53-year-old Scottish actor to reprise his iconic role, he recently expressed his hope to return as Obi-Wan in a new Star Wars project.
“I really do hope we get a chance to do another one,” he said in an interview with Variety. “Between where we ended off in the series and when Alec Guinness comes on screen with Luke Skywalker, I think there’s another few stories to tell in there.”
His Star Wars prequel trilogy co-star, Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker alongside him, will present McGregor with his Walk of Fame star this Thursday. Christensen also expressed his enthusiasm for more Obi-Wan Kenobi. Speaking to Variety, he said: "If it means that I got to do more with Ewan, then that’s a no-brainer, but I really hope that he continues with the character. Just as a fan, it’s so exciting to get to watch him play Obi-Wan — he’s just so good at it."
Is Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2 confirmed?
Technically, Obi-Wan Kenobi hasn't been cancelled by Lucasfilm and Disney, but there's no official announcement about a second season either. Of course, many Star Wars fans are still hopeful that the series will be renewed for Season 2; even Ewan McGregor himself is hopeful that we'll see more of his character's story before A New Hope, even if it takes several years to make it happen. At the Goteborg Film Festival last January, the actor said (via Den of Geek) that he “would love to do the second season, but there’s no talk of it yet. There is a lot going on at Disney.”
During a panel at MegaCon Orlando earlier this year, McGregor jokingly urged fans to write to Disney to encourage the company to renew Obi-Wwan Kenobi for a second season, saying, “There was originally gonna be a movie, and I’ve often thought, should it have been a movie? But I kinda think it’s great that they did it that way, and it’s a longer story, and hopefully it’s more satisfying as a result. We got more time to weave a story. Let’s hope they do another one. Can everyone write to Disney?”
You can watch him say that in this video from the A Couple of Park Hoppers YouTube channel:
Recently, Lucasfilm seems to be more focused on the post-Empire time period and expanding what Dave Failoni and Jon Favreau have developed around The Mandalorian. Earlier this year, The Mandalorian and Grogu movie was officially confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger, and it's set to become the next Star Wars film, which is currently set to release in 2026. There's also an untitled Rey movie starring Daisy Ridley, so as McGregor said, there's clearly a lot going on right now at Lucasfilm and Disney.
With the numerous Star Wars projects that have been cancelled in recent years (The Acolyte being the latest one to get axed), it's not surprising that we haven't heard any updates on Obi-Wan Kenobi's renewal status, but based on the fan response at MegaCon alone, it seems there are still a bunch of fans who'd be excited to see him play Obi-Wan again.
All episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi are now streaming on Disney+.
