Ranked boxfights, free rewards, and pure building action arrive April 9.

Starting April 9, Fortnite is launching a brand-new core mode called Arenas, developed using Unreal Editor for Fortnite. This dedicated experience lets players jump into competitive round-robin boxfight tournaments, pitting them against others in fast-paced 1v1 or 2v2 matches within custom arenas. Built from the ground up by Epic Games, Arenas brings an official, polished take on one of the most popular player-created Creative experiences in the game.

Arenas is not Fortnite's first attempt at an official boxfight map. The Legends Landing island already featured a pair of small boxfight arenas in its lobby area, primarily used as a gathering spot for watching professional tournaments. However, those were secondary features rather than the main focus, whereas the new Arenas mode makes boxfighting the central gameplay loop.

Core Gameplay Focused on Building

Arenas is strictly a builds-only mode, which makes perfect sense for a boxfight experience where the entire point is constructing and breaking structures during intense close-quarters combat. The arena itself starts as a large empty square with no natural cover, so building skill is essential to survive and win. Epic designed the mode to double as a tutorial for newer players looking to improve their building mechanics, offering a low-pressure environment to practice edits, ramps, and piece control.

Matches take place in lobbies of 16 players for solos or 8 teams for duos. Gameplay consists of back-to-back 1v1 or 2v2 rounds in a round-robin format, with everyone facing off against every other participant or team until a winner emerges. The first player or team to reach 20 wins in solos or 15 wins in duos claims victory for the tournament. Winning rounds quickly grants more rounds overall and boosts points, encouraging aggressive, decisive play. Arena sizes rotate each round for variety, and every match uses pre-set weapon loadouts to keep things fair and balanced—no worrying about loot RNG.

Ranked Competition Takes Center Stage

Unlike standard matchmaking, Arenas uses a visible ranked system where player skill directly determines matchups. Everyone begins at the same starting rank upon launch, creating a level playing field before the leaderboard separates the field. This setup ensures fairer competition and helps players track their improvement over time through dedicated ranked playlists. New maps and rotating loadouts keep the experience fresh across different skill brackets. The ranked focus encourages consistent play, with a season running through early June to give players plenty of time to climb.

Quick Duels via 1v1 Challenges

Beyond the main tournament structure, Arenas introduces a quick “1v1 Me” feature. Players can send a direct challenge to anyone on the Showdown Leaderboards or their friends list, jumping straight into a best-of series where the first to seven eliminations wins. This adds an easy way to settle rivalries, warm up skills, or practice specific building techniques without committing to a full tournament lobby. It serves as a flexible on-ramp for casual sessions or intense head-to-head testing.

Handling Disconnects with Team Merges

In 2v2 tournaments, Arenas includes a smart team merge system to handle disconnects or early quits. If one teammate leaves mid-tournament, the game will automatically pair the remaining player with another solo queue participant in the same situation, allowing the duo to continue competing as a full team. While this new mechanic may have occasional hiccups at launch, it shows Epic's commitment to smooth, uninterrupted play in a team-based format and helps maintain momentum during longer sessions.

Earn Free Cosmetics Through Wins

Progressing through Arenas matches unlocks exclusive cosmetic rewards without any additional purchase required. Players who secure 125 round wins will earn the Cracked spray, a fun nod to the high-intensity building battles that define the mode. Reaching 300 total wins grants the Builder's Crest back bling, a stylish shield accessory that celebrates mastery of the boxfight format. These rewards give players clear goals to chase while grinding ranked sessions and add tangible motivation for repeated play.

Live Commentary Enhances the Action

For the first time in a Fortnite core mode, Arenas includes a dedicated gameplay announcer. Elite Zadie, a Fortnite-original character, provides energetic voice lines to hype up eliminations, round starts, and tournament milestones. This addition brings a fresh layer of excitement and polish reminiscent of competitive esports broadcasts, making every match feel more dynamic and immersive.
