Marvel Studios has finally released a new trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine after Ryan Reynolds dropped a teaser on his Instagram over the weekend. The preview centers on Hugh Jackman’s return as the adamantium-clawed hero after his supposed demise in the 2017 Logan. But aside from the titular characters, the trailer finally gives a good look at the new Marvel villain, Cassandra Nova, played by Emma Corrin.

The first Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, released during the Super Bowl in February, gave a glimpse of Cassandra’s bald head and long ears. However, only the back of her head was seen at the time. Hence, the new preview is the first time fans have seen her full, powerful glory as she fights off Wolverine. So, who is Cassandra Nova and what’s her connection to the X-Men?

Who is Cassandra Nova?

Cassandra Nova is the evil twin sister of Charles Xavier and one of the most formidable enemies of the X-Men, especially her brother. Her origin is a Mummudrai, a Shi’ar term for “anti-self” who exists within the Astral Plane. Xavier recognized her evil presence when they were still in the womb and did everything in his power to kill her, resulting in a miscarriage.

But while Xavier thought Cassandra was already dead, she survived undetected as a growing mass of cells in a sewer wall. She then created a new body for herself, fueled by her eagerness to take her revenge against Charles.

What are Cassandra Nova’s powers in X-Men?

Cassandra regenerated by replicating Charles’ DNA, making her possess the same powers as her brother.
She, too, has advanced psionic abilities, like telepathy and telekinesis. Hence, in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer, she can be seen taking control of Wolverine’s moves. Without a sweat, Cassandra is able to dodge Wolverine’s attack by controlling the latter’s mind.

At one point, Wolverine even ends up hurting himself when he slashes his own legs with his claws when Cassandra points at his arm. But aside from telepathy, telekinesis, and mind control, Cassandra’s other abilities are cosmic fire and infernal control, immunity to magic and mimicry, premonition, mind and body exchange, soul gathering, and dematerialization, proving Deadpool and Wolverine are up to a big challenge.

How will Cassandra Nova’s story play out in Deadpool & Wolverine?

Everybody thought that Cassandra would be introduced to X-Men ‘97 after Episode 5, Remember It, featured the genocidal massacre of Genosha, which she unleashed in Marvel Comics’ New X-Men story arc E is for Extinction. However, the animated series Episode 6, Lifedeath – Part 2, revealed the real culprit behind the attack: Mister Sinister.

By the looks of it, the revival series will veer away from the comic’s original plot to make Mister Sinister the main villain so that Cassandra may have another story to play out in Deadpool & Wolverine. One of the possible stories is her plan to stop Jean Grey’s efforts to establish a mutant nation by using her abilities to manipulate the government through microscopic sentinel technology implanted in humans’ brains.

This storyline may be connected to her real motives in Deadpool & Wolverine, with her hate toward mutants playing after almost dying at the hands of his brother. However, fans should take this assumption with a grain of salt, as nothing is confirmed yet.
