Deadpool & Wolverine is making waves in cinematic history. Besides its first trailer breaking records as the most-viewed movie preview within 24 hours, it’s the first Deadpool movie to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a move made possible by Disney's acquisition of the rights from 20th Century Fox. This also marks the debut of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine in the MCU canon, potentially paving the way for other X-Men characters. But what's truly captivating is the revelation of Ryan Reynolds' multiple roles in the movie’s credits, a historic moment in Marvel Studios' history.
While it's no secret that Reynolds will be reprising his iconic role as the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool & Wolverine, what sets this apart is his additional roles. Marvel Studios has unveiled that he won’t only star in the movie but also the writer and producer of the threequel. This is a rare feat, even among the MCU's actors who have ventured into producing their own projects, like Tom Hiddleston, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson, to name a few. Reynolds is the first to pen the screenplay for a Marvel movie he also leads.
Though this is not surprising for Deadpool fans, knowing that he also co-wrote the first and second movies, no Marvel actor has done it before. The same can be said for his production company, Maximum Effort Productions, for being the first production house to produce an MCU movie aside from Marvel Studios. Reynolds has invested a lot in it, proving his dedication to the franchise by working in front and behind the camera.
“I really had a crash course in the value of marketing and storytelling in this context through Deadpool,” he told Forbes in 2022. “Deadpool, the franchise, never had the kind of budgets and finances to work with that some of the larger comic book properties did. Two of the greatest adversaries to creativity is too much time and too much money. I learned the value of character over spectacle through Deadpool.”
