The Star Wars franchise has had its fair share of ups and downs over the last decade, but it's no secret that Disney still sees it as a lucrative property. For every The Mandalorian and Ahsoka that have enjoyed a great deal of success, there are also several projects that, unfortunately, never saw the light of day. But according to a new report, one project previously thought to have been abandoned completely is back on the franchise's slate.
According to a recent scoop from industry insider MyTimeToShineHello, Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron, a project which was long believed to have been shelved permanently, is back in development. Interestingly, instead of being a feature-length presentation as previously planned, the scooper claims that the said project will now be reworked as "a big-budget streaming series".
Key details surrounding the project remain under wraps, and it's also worth noting that Disney hasn't provided fans with updates regarding Star Wars' future film slate, apart from movies that have already been announced, like The Mandalorian and Grogu and Daisy Ridley's post-sequel trilogy film.
To give you a refresher, Rogue Squadron is an original story first announced at the 2020 Disney Investor's Day. Expected to enter production in 2021, the film was quietly removed from Disney's list of upcoming projects a year later, and fans haven't heard anything about it since.
In December 2024, it was reported by scooper Daniel Richtman that Rogue Squadron was officially brought back in development, though it remains unclear whether or not Jenkins would still be involved. Her last big project was 2020's Wonder Woman 84 over at DC, which received negative reviews, prompting Warner Bros. to pull the plug on a third installment.
Speaking with Collider in March 2024, the director revealed that she signed a new deal with Lucasfilm and that she's determined to complete Rogue Squadron.
So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, I thought maybe I'll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3. So we did a deal for that to happen, started a deal, but I thought I was doing Wonder Woman. When that went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, oh, we gotta finish this deal. We finished the deal right as the strike was happening. So I now owe a draft of Star Wars and so we will see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?
Rogue Squadron's story is centered on the franchise's introduction of “a new generation of starfighter pilots” as they “earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride." The project was heavily rumored to take place after the sequel trilogy.
This is obviously great news for Star Wars fans eager to see the supposed film finally take flight on the small screen. Let's just hope it's actually on the horizon.
Meanwhile, Star Wars' next big project, The Mandalorian and Grogu is slated to hit cinemas in May 2026.
