It has been confirmed that the upcoming Blue Beetle movie will introduce a serious threat into the DC universe. This villain has been a staple of the comics for almost two decades. The movie’s promotional video was recently released, featuring a scene in which the superhero is tossed through a wall by a massive orange energy blast.

Jaime Reyes, who plays Xolo Maridueña in the movie, quickly recovers mid-air and asks the Scarab what smashed him through the wall. To this, the alien responds, "OMAC incoming, Jaime." Soon after this warning, we are met with a gigantic robotic figure charging and jumping through the hole in the wall.

In this scene, the mention of OMAC is the first time that Blue Beetle has hinted at the inclusion of a superpowered cyborg. Although it remains a mystery as to how the OMAC will join Blue Beetle’s wider narrative, plenty of fans suspect it might be related to Carapax, the infamous villain who wears powerful red armor to chase Jaime.

Some have also suggested that the DCU movie has decided to make a change to the origin story of Carapax, turning him into an OMAC. However, this is just a theory, as DC Studios hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet regarding the character’s nature.

What’s an OMAC?

In DC Comics, OMAC used to stand for Observational Metahuman Activity Construction, but it was updated to Omni Mind And Community. An OMAC was specifically created for the story "The OMAC Project" by Greg Rucka in 2005 and is technically a human being cyborg via exposure to a distinctive virus.

These creatures have only one goal, which is to assassinate all super-powered individuals, either good or bad. They have been present throughout the world of DC and are controlled by a super-intelligence called Brother Eye, an organization created by Batman himself as a source to gather data regarding the metahumans on Earth.

Even though Blue Beetle’s main focus is on the hero, Maridueña has promised that fans of the franchise can expect a lot through cameos. Maridueña said, "I think if you’re a DC fan, there’s going to be more than just one character that you recognize. I can tell you that.”

The movie’s trailer got fans suspicious by highlighting a moment when Jaime Reyes’ Uncle Rudy calls Batman a fascist. This single line ignited plenty of discussions in the fandom since some believe it might be a setup for The Dark Knight to make somewhat of an appearance.

Blue Beetle will release in theaters on August 18, 2023, so hang tight and wait for it to release!
