X-Men '97 Showrunner Originally Had a Five-Season Plan for the Series

Though it remains to be seen how many seasons X-Men '97 will have, Season 2 is already in the works, and Season 3 is in development.

X-Men ‘97 has continuously stunned fans from its first season’s premiere to its penultimate episodes. And as there’s only one episode left before its epic premiere season ends, fans can’t help but wonder how the series will continue. Of course, showrunner Beau DeMayo remains tight-lipped on what will happen next. However, he reveals he originally had a five-season plan for the reboot.

X user @avatarandrew asked DeMayo what would happen in the X-Men ‘97 Season 1 finale. With the major cliffhanger Episode 9, Tolerance is Extinction – Part 2, featured, the fan wondered if the upcoming Episode 10, Tolerance is Extinction – Part 3, would also end in the same way that viewers would go crazy waiting for X-Men ‘97 Season 2.

“I’d like you to discover the answer to this on your own,” DeMayo responded. “But I will also say I had a five season plan.”

The series creator also thanked the fan for calling the show “awesome” and a perfection from the first episode to the latest. Truly, the revival has been making every viewer’s jaw drop with every episode release, becoming the talk of the town and a breeding ground for several theories. To prove its success, it has a 98-perfect rating and a 94-percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

How many seasons X-Men ‘97 will have?

With the success the first season of X-Men ‘97 is experiencing today, it’s no surprise that the show will continue. Long before the show’s premiere, its second season was already in the works. DeMayo revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 that they were already writing the second season finale. However, mere days before the first season’s release, the creator was fired by Marvel, though the reason wasn’t revealed.

However, Marvel Studios Head of Television and Streaming, Brad Winderbaum, assured through Entertainment Weekly that DeMayo finished writing Seasons 1 and 2. He had even seen the animatics for the entire second season, though there was still a lot of work to do. But the show wouldn’t just end there. Winderbaum continued that they would start developing a third season “very soon,” though they were still trying to figure out who would write it next.

“That's going to come as a surprise — there's many talented X-Men fans, excellent writers,” he said.
