New York Comic Con just gave fans their first real look at the future of X-Men '97. During Marvel's panel at NYCC 2026 on Thursday, the studio debuted a teaser for X-Men '97 Season 3 — and it paints a grim picture for mutantkind.
Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel television, animation, comics, and franchise, revealed the clip on stage, and it wastes no time setting the stakes. The teaser opens on graffiti scrawled across a wall: "Where are the X-Men?" The city has descended into chaos. Police have blocked off the streets and sealed the border, cutting mutants off from Professor X's school and leaving them with nowhere to go — unless they carry letters of transit.
The clip follows a young mutant who tries to sneak across the barricade. She is caught and deemed a threat, and just as capture seems inevitable, a team of mutants swoops in to rescue her. When the girl asks, "Are you the X-Men?" they answer: "No, we're the brotherhood."
Elsewhere in the teaser, Storm and Professor X are shown driving together, deep in discussion about the conflict they are facing with the president of the United States — a loaded detail, given where Season 2 left things. The pair then exit the car and arrive at Gambit and Rogue's wedding, where the guest list includes some famous faces: She-Hulk and Deadpool are both spotted in attendance.
The teaser was screened exclusively for attendees of Marvel Television's Thursday afternoon panel, which Winderbaum packed with animation announcements. Executive producer Eric Lewald also settled one lingering question from the Season 2 finale on stage, confirming that Nightcrawler's death is permanent: "Oh yeah." His fellow executive producer Julia Lewald added, "But the finale of Season 2 is very emotional, and it's earned." Eric Lewald credited showrunner Matthew Chauncey for the season's payoff, noting that the personal relationships in jeopardy made the outcome fit.
The teaser builds directly on the Season 2 finale, which aired August 12. That season scattered the X-Men across time with Apocalypse as the new antagonist, and in a climactic episode set in ancient Egypt, Charles Xavier and the heroes failed to stop Apocalypse from killing Magneto. It also introduced the government-sanctioned X-Factor — including Magneto's daughter Polaris — and X-Force, the rogue team led by Cable, the time-traveling son of Cyclops and Jean Grey. Few arcs hit harder than Gambit's: killed in Season 1, resurrected as one of Apocalypse's Horsemen, then brought back to life by Rogue harnessing a Celestial's power — a rescue that cost Nightcrawler everything when he traded places with her and sacrificed himself to keep her alive.
The finale's biggest twist now looms over everything: Mystique murdered X-Factor leader Valerie Cooper and assumed her identity, maneuvering her non-mutant son Graydon Creed into the presidency. The teaser's mention of the president suggests Season 3 will confront that conspiracy head-on.
X-Men '97 — the Disney+ revival of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series that aired on Fox Kids from 1992 to 1997 — debuted in 2024 to rave reviews. No premiere date for Season 3 has been announced yet.
