Four episodes into X-Men ‘97, the animated series has continuously been stunning fans with its comic arc adaptations and new character introductions. The third episode brought back a fan-favorite mutant, Forge, and the recent one saw the return of Mojo and the appearance of The Adversary. As the viewers wait for more character appearances, with six episodes still set to be released before the first season’s conclusion, the show’s director, Jake Castorena, asks fans to keep an eye on future Marvel cameos.
Castorena hints at familiar faces that are about to be seen in the future episodes of X-Men ‘97. As the original X-Men: The Animated Series featured several cameos, like Scarlet Witch, Captain America, and Spider-Man, to name a few, the same could be done to the reboot.
“Cameos [are] in the DNA of the show,” he told The Direct in a recent interview.
The supervising producer explained that surprise character appearances had been part of the series since day one, stressing it was the same thing the original show did when it aired in the ‘90s. That being said, considering X-Men ‘97 a revival, it should follow in the footsteps of what the X-Men: The Animated Series had done before.
“The OG X-Men show was the MCU before the MCU became the MCU,” he continued. “And that's just the key fundamental in that show, so for us to be a true success or a true revival, we got to adhere to that.”
Sure, Castorena didn’t reveal who would make an appearance in the new show, but several Marvel characters may appear in the series. That said, he asked fans to be vigilant for these upcoming cameos.
“I highly encourage fans to keep a look out to see who they spot,” he teased.
Which Marvel characters may appear in X-Men ‘97?
X-Men ‘97 may not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, considering it pickups where X-Men: The Animated Series ended, but executive producer Brad Winderbaum earlier told Variety that there were a number of characters from the animated shows that could make a cameo. With the help of Loki and the sacred timeline, Winderbaum believed that if their brains wanted to go there, there would always be “potential for connections.”
Hence, here are several Marvel characters that may make a cameo in the revival series, including Scarlet Witch. Wanda Maximoff may return to the series due to her connection to the X-Men, with Magneto being her father. She’s also a founding member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, alongside her brother, Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, making her part of the X-Men universe. As Magneto plays a major role in the reboot, his daughter may make an appearance and introduce other heroes from the Avengers.
Talking about Quicksilver, he may also make an appearance in the series. Despite being resented by her father and killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Pietro may finally get the attention he needs in X-Men ‘97. The series may reveal what it really means to be Quicksilver and make his father a much more complex character with his appearance, even if it will be brief.
Lastly, Nick Fury may also make his way to X-Men '97. Though the show isn’t part of the MCU, it can’t be denied that it’s now under Marvel Studios, and Fury plays a major role in its shared universe. As he regularly meets heroes from different origins, building connections between humanity and the superheroes, he may play a part in this story.
New episodes of X-Men ’97 are set to air every Wednesday on Disney+. Its first four episodes are now available to stream. With this latest update about the series, fans will surely be on the lookout for future cameos in the next episodes.
