Netflix has confirmed The Night Agent Season 2 after its first installment became one of the American streaming giant’s most-watched shows ever. The political drama features lots of 24-style twists and turns as FBI agent Peter Sutherland uncovers conspirators within the government, as well as rogue assassins and a murder witness named Rose, whom he must protect if he is ever to find the truth.

Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, the series is co-produced by Shawn Ryan of The Shield and SWAT, and Seth Gordon of The Good Doctor. Its cast includes Oscar-nominated Hong Chau from The Whale, Fola Evans-Akingbola from Death in Paradise and DB Woodside from Lucifer, who are all expected to make a return in The Night Agent Season 2.

Gabriel Basso leads them all as Peter, an actor best known for his roles in Super 8 and The Big C series, whose heritage as a real-life action hero made him ideal for the role. As fans await for more details, here is everything we know about the upcoming The Night Agent Season 2.

Unfortunately, Netflix has not announced an official release date for The Night Agent Season 2. However, speculations are rife that the imminent new installment will likely arrive in 2024 and consist of another round of 10 episodes.

Executive producer Shawn Ryan revealed to TV Line that he was shocked at how quickly the series got picked up for a second season. Of his reaction to The Night Agent Season 2 confirmation, he said:

"I mean, I had been told that we shouldn't expect any news about a pick-up until at least a month after the show started.”

Season 1 of The Night Agent premiered on Netflix on March 23, 2023, and the series has already been renewed for a second season five days later. In the first week of its release, the program topped Netflix's Global Top 10 TV shows with over 168 million hours of viewing.

Peter and his story are the center of the show, so fans can anticipate the return of Gabriel Basso for The Night Agent Season 2. There is a possibility that Luciane Buchanan will reprise her role as Rose Larkin, given that she is romantically attached to Peter. She is also the CEO of a Silicon Valley company, a plotline that was trimmed short at the start of Season 1.

President Travers, portrayed by Kari Matchett; Vice President Redfield, played by Christopher Shyer; erstwhile Chief of Staff Diane Farr, played by Hong Chau, and the villainous Gordon Wick, portrayed by Ben Cotton, were among the principal characters who survived the events of Season 1. All of them are expected to return for The Night Agent Season 2.

Fola Evans-Akingbola and Sarah Desjardins are also projected to return as Chelsea Arrington and Maddie Redfield, respectively, in The Night Agent Season 2. Avid followers of the show may also expect Netflix to add more names to the cast in the coming months.

Meanwhile, in an interview with Variety, Gabriel talked about what Peter’s codename would be in The Night Agent Season 2. The lead star shared:

“I trust Shawn implicitly, so I will defer to him on this one. I am so in love with this show, and I so want to make future episodes. But it is a little torturous to think too much about that before it happens, so I haven’t thought about it. But it’s a great point. We are going to have to figure it out if we do get a Season 2. Rose’s aunt and uncle were Sidewinder and Gazelle, so we’ll have to figure out what the perfect avatar for Peter is.”

The Night Agent Season 2 Plot: What is the upcoming season about?

No official plot details have been revealed for The Night Agent Season 2. However, it is expected to continue the story of FBI agent Peter Sutherland's exploits, either in the White House basement or in a more extended capacity. While the book on which the series is based is a standalone story, author Matthew Quirk has authored a number of additional novels with similar murky spy storylines that could serve as inspiration for future seasons.

Of the upcoming The Night Agent Season 2, executive producer Shawn Ryan previously shared:

“I don’t want to tell this specific story over five seasons, I want to tell this specific story in one season and give some satisfaction to the audience that they see how things turn out. They learn what the truth is about Peter’s father, they learn what the conspiracy was. You can feel a sense of completion. If we are successful enough that Netflix wants more seasons, I think there’d be a whole new world in which you would see a limited number of characters from this current season going into that. But that’s something that I’d have to sit down with the writers and have it all figured out. I really love the questions that we need answered on: What does it mean that Peter would be a night agent? Where is he going? Now that Rose is going back to California to try to restart her tech career, where does that leave Peter and Rose? I think these are all questions that we almost certainly would love to answer in a potential Season 2, and I certainly hope we get the opportunity to do that.”

In a more recent interview with Comicbook, Shawn divulged that The Night Agent Season 2 will not take place in the DC area. He furthered:

“We’ll be in a different part of the world exploring different characters than we had in Season 1. And we’re determining who from Season 1 might appear in Season 2. But essentially we’re going to be telling a whole brand-new story, which is exciting and scary.”
