The Last of Us Showrunner Says Max Series Could Run for 4 Seasons

Craig Mazin revealed his hopes for The Last of Us to go for at least four seasons

The showrunner of The Last of Us is hinting at the possibility of four seasons for the show. Initially, attempts were made to adapt the extensive story of the popular video game franchise into a film. However, due to the complexity of the narrative, this approach proved challenging. Nevertheless, HBO greenlit the adaptation which gained rapid popularity and resulted in the approval of a second season.

But can we expect to see more beyond the second season? There are several speculations about how many seasons of The Last of Us can be done. While others believe it would only be good from two seasons like the Naughty Dog games, there are speculations that the TV show will expand on what could happen in the future.

So what's happening beyond The Last of Us Season 2? In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Craig Mazin shared that he envisions four seasons as an ideal endpoint for the series. He even entertained the possibility of extending to five seasons if the storyline necessitates it.

"You never know… It can end up being three or five. But four seems like a good number. Some seasons, because of the story we're telling, will need fewer episodes and some will need more," Mazin said. Regardless of the number of episodes, Mazin's primary focus is delivering a satisfying viewing experience: "What's important is when they get to the end of the season, they're like, 'That was a good season.'"

As the anticipation for The Last of Us continues to build, fans can look forward to watching how the complex and captivating story unfolds over the course of multiple seasons, guided by the creative vision of its dedicated showrunner.
