Marvel Comics spent time telling stories during the original Star Wars trilogy, which includes Star Wars: A New Hope, Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, but now, the company is moving on to a new era of storytelling, with a focus on the time period after Return of the Jedi when the Rebellion defeated the Empire.
As previously revealed, Marvel is releasing three limited series that will feature the story of The Battle of Jakku, the epic final battle of the Galactic Civil War and one of the major events set between the Original Trilogy and the Sequel Trilogy. The first installment, titled Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising, sets up a new villain on the side of the Empire, and the first issue is coming out this Wednesday.
Marvel has shared a preview for Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku – Insurgency Rising #1 by Alex Segura, Leonard Kirk, Rachelle Rosenberg, and VC's Joe Caramagna. The preview reveals that the first installment begins in the Anoat Sector in the outer rim, hours after the Rebellion became victorious in the Battle of Endor. Word of the Empire's fall hasn't reachd the Anoat Sector since it's lightyears away from Endor. The preview shows two Rebellion pilots being targeted by TIE fighters when we see what's left of the second Death Star.
However, a nefarious Imperial is sharing some "fake news" to keep reassure those loyal to the Empire that they haven't failed them, so instead of informing the Anoat Sector of the Empire's collapse, the villain lies and sends a broadcast signal declaring the Empire has won and the Rebellion's fall. "Fear not. The Empire has not fallen. In fact, it is thriving," he says in the broadcast.
"It's an unbelievable honor to be able to tell this lost story of Star Wars history, alongside so many amazing artists, in the pages of the three Battle of Jakku limited series," Segura said in a press release, when the comic was was announced. "Our story will be epic in scope – involving all the major characters you love, plus some new, exciting additions to the mythos. We'll not only give readers a front-row seat to the final battle of the Galactic Civil War – we'll reframe the aftermath of the Battle of Endor and introduce a new, menacing threat that will keep our heroes guessing. The goal for all of us is to turn up the volume and make sure this adventure stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the other stories of the era. As the Empire collapses, a new darkness arises!"
