The fans of the popular RPG Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic are beginning to fear that the much-anticipated PS5 remake might have gotten canceled. PlayStation announced in 2021 that it was going to collaborate with Aspyr Media to develop a brand-new iteration of Bioware’s KOTOR, which was initially launched all the way back in 2003. Ever since then, no details regarding the project have been released, despite several reports claiming that there have been some development issues behind the scenes and a possible change in studios.
However, as so much time has passed without any official word, fans are beginning to fear that the latest move by PlayStation has raised some serious red flags for the upcoming game. Many fans took to Reddit after noticing that PlayStation recently scrapped the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake announcement trailer from its official YouTube channel.
The PlayStation Blog post where the KOTOR Remake was initially shared, the game’s embedded trailer that was linked to the teaser that launched in 2021 was recently made private. Even though some other YouTube channels still have the trailer live, it’s devastating to see that PlayStation has made this video private, especially ever since its funding and the title’s publishing.
It’s hard to say what this particular move from PlayStation might suggest for the KOTOR Remake. As per the fans, this might indicate that the game has been canceled without any official notice. This might be an extreme conclusion for one to come to, especially considering that Lucasfilm Games, Aspyr, and PlayStation haven’t yet confirmed anything of the sort.
Another reasonable explanation could be that PlayStation might have accidentally made this KOTOR video private, meaning this whole situation does not mean anything. Despite what the truth might be, fans of the franchise shouldn’t jump to conclusions just yet until they receive any official confirmation from either PlayStation or Aspyr regarding the KOTOR Remake.
When will the KOTOR Remake release?
When the KOTOR remake was first announced back in 2021, the game’s developers, Aspyr, said that the game was “early in development”, implying that there wouldn’t be an official release date any time soon. This suspicion turned out to be correct because it has been two years since the original announcement, and PlayStation or the game's developers haven’t given us any updates on the game. This silence from the developers, along with the worrisome reports on the game’s status, makes us wonder if the KOTOR remake is still in the works or if the project has been completely scrapped.
Till we receive an official update from Aspyr or PlayStation, we can only assume that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake will come out sometime in the future.
