Almost 15 years after the original Spice and Wolf anime ended with a second season, the story of Holo and Lawrence will continue in the upcoming Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf. The third anime adaptation was officially announced in February 2022. After nearly two years, Toho Animation has dropped its second preview, showing the cute encounter between the two protagonists. The Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf preview begins with Holo, a wolf incarnation dubbed the god of fertility, introducing herself as a sword and proud wolf. As the trailer gives a glimpse of their village, Lawrence comes to the scene, talking about Holo’s wolf ears. The two then spend some time together, with Holo telling Lawrence that what is important when he’s lying is why he has to lie.
From there, Holo starts talking about Lawrence’s good traits, calling him a very discerning and cute boy. As they gradually form a close bond, Lawrence and Holo begin a journey together.

What is Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf about?
Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf follows the story of Kraft Lawrence and Holo. As a peddler, Lawrence visits different towns to sell goods and ends up in a small village where he meets Holo, a beautiful girl with ears and a tail who calls herself a “Wise Wolf.” As he learns her wish to return to her hometown of Yoitsu Forest, the two travel together to the north. However, they’re about to encounter different problems as their carriage starts to have issues.

The anime is based on the light novel series written by Isuna Hasekura and illustrated by Ju Ayakura. Since February 2006, ASCII Media Works has published 24 novels under its Dengeki Bunko imprint. It has also published five volumes of its spin-off light novel, Wolf and Parchment, since September 2016. It was then adapted into manga with illustrations by Keito Koume, which started its serialization in November 2007. It was licensed in English by Yen Press.
Imagin, Brain’s Base, and Marvy Jack adapted it into anime, with the first season released in January 2008 and the second season in July 2009. The two seasons were released in English by Kadokawa Pictures USA and Funimation. It also has two visual novels for the Nintendo DS, released in June 2008 and September 2009, respectively.
