What is Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles about?

Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles is based on the isekai light novel series written by Yuri Kitayama and illustrated by Riv. Hobby Japan acquired the series and published it under its HJ Bunko imprint since October 2015. The series also received a manga adaptation with art by tenkla and was serialized online via Hobby Japan's Comic Fire website from October 2016 to February 2017, but was discontinued due to the artist's poor health. A second manga adaptation, which has been serialized online via the same website since 2017, was released, and it was illustrated by Futago Minaduki.

J-Novel Club, which licensed the series in English in North America, provided a plot synopsis for Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles:

Meet Rio: a callous orphaned boy living in the slums. At only 7-years-old, he realizes he’s actually the reincarnation of Haruto Amakawa, a Japanese university student with a tragic past. While still reeling from this shocking epiphany, Rio also comes to learn that he possesses extremely potent magical abilities and uses his new powers to solve the kidnapping case of a little girl. His good deed is acknowledged, and he’s rewarded by being enrolled into… a prestigious academy for noble children…?
