Marvel Studios has confirmed that Sir Patrick Stewart's final on-screen performance will be as Professor Charles Xavier in Avengers: Doomsday. The confirmation came on Thursday, hours after Stewart's death at 86 was announced.

In a tribute published on its official website, Marvel Studios looked back on Stewart's more than 25 years as Xavier and confirmed he returned to the role once more in Avengers: Doomsday, calling it his final on-screen appearance. Stewart's family announced his death earlier on Thursday, saying he died at home in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"Sir Patrick brought Professor Charles Xavier to life with extraordinary grace, intelligence, and humanity, defining the character for generations of fans, from X-Men to Logan to Avengers: Doomsday," Marvel Studios wrote in its tribute. "He was a singular talent, a generous collaborator, and a true gentleman."

One Final Turn as Professor X

Stewart made his debut as Professor X in 2000's X-Men, embodying the composure, class and wisdom of the telepathic mutant who mentors the team. For more than 25 years he brought a gravitas to the role that helped transform superhero storytelling, earning fans across the globe. He closed out his run in the Fox era with an unforgettable performance in 2017's Logan.

He then joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2022 as an alternate-universe Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Avengers: Doomsday now brings him back as the original Xavier, alongside Ian McKellen's Magneto and fellow Fox-era X-Men stars James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Kelsey Grammer.

The film brings the incursions of the comics to the big screen, with heroes from different worlds colliding as countless Earths are destroyed. Trailers for the film have already shown Xavier and Magneto reflecting on their history as their world faces destruction, a moment that now plays as a farewell for both characters.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and Stewart's X-Men co-stars and collaborators have spent the day sharing tributes to him. Marvel's tribute also remembered his years as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, his range in films from Robin Hood: Men in Tights to Green Room, and his decades of Shakespeare on stage. It noted his many years as a lauded member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and his knighthood in 2010, saying he leaves behind an "indelible cultural footprint and legacy."
