It has been over a week since Netflix released Parasyte: The Grey, and the show is now topping the streamer’s Top 10 TV (Non-English) list with about 6.3 million views. Though the service has yet to officially renew the series for a second season, its cliffhanging finale is probably enough evidence that the fight against the parasites is not yet over, and humanity may get a new ally. After director Yeon Sang-ho teased the possibility of having Parasyte: The Grey Season 2, here’s everything we know so far.

All six episodes of Parasyte: The Grey were released on April 5. And within just a few days after its release, it already topped its Top 10 chart for April 1 to 7. By now, many may have already watched the show and seen the introduction of Shinichi Izumi (Masaki Suda) in Episode 6. And by the looks of it, the war between humans and parasites is far from over.

Who is Shinichi Izumi?

Shinichi is the protagonist of the horror manga series Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaaki. He’s a regular high school student who gets infected by a parasite named Migi. But just like Jeong Su-in's (Jeon So-nee) parasite, Heidi, Migi failed to control Shinichi’s brain fully and only gained control of his right hand. Thus, the name is Migi, a Japanese word that means “right” in English.

The two quickly bond and manage to co-exist to survive and help humans. However, compared to the manga’s story, where Shinichi is only a student, the show introduces him as a parasite expert journalist with important intelligence to tell Choi Jun-kyung (Lee Jung-hyun).

What does Shinichi Izumi’s appearance mean for Parasyte: The Grey Season 2?

Shinichi’s introduction leaves an open door for Parasyte: The Grey Season 2 to continue. If Jun-kyung stops doubting him and accepts his help, Team Grey may have a new member who’s a hybrid of human and parasite who can track down the remaining parasites in Korea after the fight against them in the first season—should the show be renewed.

With the death of detective Kim Chul-min’s (Kwon Hae-hyo) parasite and failure to take over the Mayor’s brain with the help of Su-in and Seol Kang-woo (Koo Kyo-hwan), there may be new antagonists Shinichi has to face. If it follows the story of the anime Parasyte: The Maxim, the second season may introduce the main antagonist, Gotou, who’s known for being the most powerful parasite for embodying five different parasites and a product of an experiment on the cohabitation of more than one parasite in a single body of a host.

What did director Yeon Sang-ho say about Parasyte: The Grey Season 2?

In an interview with Naver (as translated by What’s on Netflix), Sang-ho revealed that there are plans for Parasyte: The Grey Season 2. And if the show ever gets the chance to be renewed, Shinichi will play a major role in it.

The screenwriter continued that the decision to do the second season would be up to Netflix. As he said that Shinichi’s introduction took place eight years after the events of the fight to save the mayor, they had to dig deeper to tell a new and exciting story.

“There is no limit to imagination, but it depends on whether it gets greenlit for production,” he explained.

What to Expect from Parasyte: The Grey Season 2

Should Netflix announce the coming of Parasyte: The Grey Season 2, it may focus on the story of Shinichi. The show will be the sequel to the original manga, as Shinichi stayed in Japan, and the series took place in a South Korean city called Namil.

Shinichi’s appearance may mean there are still parasites in the country, and he may want to help Jun-kyung and the rest of Team Grey to eradicate them officially. Though the parasite that lives within him, Migi, is dormant, he may have the chance to wake up if he gets to meet another parasite living within its hosts, like Su-in and Heidi. However, it remains to be seen if Shinichi and Su-in will meet or if the latter will join Team Grey to fight for the people again.

Parasyte: The Grey has only been on Netflix for over a week, so the streamer is probably still monitoring if the show will continuously perform positively in the coming weeks. If it still gets high ratings and positive responses, there may be a great chance that fans will know more about Shinichi in Parasyte: The Grey Season 2.
