A new Star Wars movie trilogy is reportedly in the works at Lucasfilm, and longtime X-Men film writer-producer Simon Kinberg will reportedly write and produce the three movies with studio chief Kathleen Kennedy. This will launch a new series with brand new characters after 2019's Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver, concluded the original nine-chapter Skywalker Saga.
According to Deadline, Kinberg's Star Wars trilogy will be set in the Skywalker Saga, but will be independent from previously-confirmed Star Wars films in development – including director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s movie about the New Jedi Order being built by Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley), and James Mangold's film about the First Jedi. However, Borys Kit of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Kinberg is set to “write, produce NEW STAR WARS TRILOGY for Lucasfilm. Sources tell me it’s NOT a continuation of the Skywalker Saga but a new story focused on new characters…a new path forward, I’ve been told.”
IGN also shared an update from their source close to the production. According to the outlet, the new Star Wars trilogy will "not, in fact, a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, despite some of the information in Deadline's initial exclusive. Instead, it'll be the beginning of a new saga, sitting alongside the other previously announced films."
Kinberg is best known for producing and writing various X-Men films for 20th Century Fox, including X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), Deadpool (2016), and Logan (2017), before making his directorial debut with X-Men: Dark Phoenix in 2019. He also worked with Lucasfilm to develop Disney Channel's Star Wars: Rebels, which he co-created with Carrie Beck and Dave Filoni. Kinberg also consulted with director J.J. Abrams on Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).
Is Daisy Ridley's Star Wars movie becoming a trilogy?
There's speculation that Kinberg is being brought in to redo Steven Knight's script for the Rey movie about the New Jedi Order starring Daisy Ridley, but at this point, it's not confirmed if that concept will be expanded into an entire trilogy of films. it would make sense to see Rey "pass the torch" to a new generation of characters, but all we have are speculations for now.
In an interview with Collider, Daisy addressed Steven Knight departing the New Jedi Order film, and was curiously excited about how the project is developing:
“And I’m really genuinely excited,” Ridley said. “And I have said I’m very excited, but I really do mean I’m excited about what’s coming. And I think we really have the luxury of making sure this is the right.”
Plot details for the new Star Wars trilogy are still being kept under wraps, but the Brazil edition of D23 Expo is taking place this weekend, so hopefully, we will get an official announcement about Kinberg's trilogy there.
