The King of Monsters is returning to wreak havoc all over Japan this year. The first trailer for Godzilla Minus One has just been released and it confirms that the great kaiju is coming back later in 2023. Moreover, the new movie is set to be an exciting sequel to the 2016 hit Shin Godzilla.
Back in 2016, TOHO Pictures released Shin Godzilla, the studio's third reboot of the wildly successful franchise. The film proved to be a huge box-office hit that dropped hints of a possible sequel. Luckily, TOHO did not disappoint as they dropped the new trailer for Godzilla Minus One.
The trailer warns about what happened in post-war Japan, revealing that the country had lost everything. "From 'zero' to 'minus'," the caption reads. The survivors are then attacked by an unseen force that is later revealed to be Godzilla.
It's a terrifying trailer that confirms Godzilla isn't done yet after what happened in the 2016 movie. In Shin Godzilla, Rando Yaguchi and his team devised a plan that would sacrifice many but ultimately freeze Godzilla solid. Although the plan worked, it was revealed that there are humanoid creatures emerging from Godzilla's tail just as he was frozen.
For now, it is unclear whether Godzilla Minus One will reveal the truth about those creatures or if they are allies to the kaiju. Moreover, the details about the sequel's plot and cast have not yet been revealed. However, we're expecting to learn more about Minus One in the next few weeks.
Godzilla Minus One is written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki who is also in charge of the VFX in the film. The movie is set to first premiere in Japan on November 3, 2023. It will then be set for international release later in the year on December 1, 2023.
