Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho Live-Action Announces Official Release Date With Teaser

Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho live-action series just released a teaser announcing its release date, and it's sooner than what many of us expected.

Netflix's next live-action adaptation of a manga franchise is Yoshihiro Togashi's Yu Yu Hakusho series, and now, the streamer has revealed its official release date that'll be kicking off sooner than fans expected. The live-action One Piece series turned out to be a great success with Netflix, with both critics and fans praising the show for staying true to the spirit of Eiichiro Oda's manga/anime franchise, and now, fans of the popular shonen franchise are excited to see Yusuke, Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama in live-action form, and the good news is that it's coming in a few weeks!

Netflix has released a brief teaser for the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho, and although no footages were revealed, the fourteen-second video announced that it will be released globally on December 14, 2023 on Netflix.

The supernatural adventure series was originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. An anime adaptation originally aired on Japan's Fuji TV network from October 1992 to December 1994, and it was directed by Noriyuki Abe and co-produced by Fuji Television, Studio Pierrot, and Yomiko Advertising. The TV anime consisted of 112 episodes, and the Yu Yu Hakusho franchise has spawned two animated films.

What is Netflix's Yu Yu Hakusho about?

The live-action Yu Yu Hakusho series is a project created with Netflix's partnership with Shuiesha, ROBOT, and TOHO. Sho Tsukikawa is directing the series with Kazutaka Sakamoto (Aggretsuko, Devilman Crybaby) serving as executive producer and Teru Morii as producer. The main cast includes: Takumi Kitamura (Tokyo Revengers) as Yusuke Urameshi, Shuhei Uesugi as Kazama Kuwabara, Kanata Hongo as Hiei, and Jun Shison as Kurama.

Netflix shared the official synopsis for Yu Yu Hakusho live-action:

The manga revolves around Yusuke Urameshi, a junior high school student who spends his days getting into fights and dies in an accident while trying to protect a young child. As he grapples with the fact that he is looking down on his dead body, a woman named Botan, who calls herself a guide to the spirit world, relays to him the shocking truth: no one expected a delinquent like Yusuke to die performing an act of goodness, and there was no place for him in either heaven or hell. Thus, Yusuke is given a chance to be revived, and after passing his trial, he becomes an Underworld Detective. From there, Yusuke becomes entwined in a mystery that envelopes the human, demon and spirit worlds. The spectacular adventure of Yusuke will now become a live action series on Netflix.
