Mortal Kombat 1’s latest trailer shows Geras’ comeback as the most recent playable character in the game. The time-controlling sand master first made his debut in Mortal Kombat 11, hooking players from the first moment with his deadly powers. In the trailer, we see Geras, the Guardian of the Hourglass, talking to Thunder Fire God, Liu Kang. It is pretty evident by the way they talk that the two old friends have some needle between each other.
Geras questions the attitude of Liu Kang after he restarted history all over again, with Geras saying, “Your vision of peace may already be compromised.” Geras’ comments in the trailer, along with his appearance in Mortal Kombat 1, further confirm that the game is a sequel to Mortal Kombat 11 as well as a soft reboot.
There is definitely a continuity established in this trailer, as the events of Mortal Kombat 11 are directly referenced in the game. When it comes to gameplay, we can see Geras engage in many of his famous time-bending, hard-hitting attacks that players can recognize well from Mortal Kombat 11.
Geras has the ability to create items out of sand and use them to crush his enemies and freeze them in time, giving the sand master plenty of time to employ multiple attacks before the time resets. Fans of Mortal Kombat: Deception will also recognize Darius, who has been added to Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo character.
In the trailer, fans also witness Liu Kang’s black hole Fatality, which is already being called the character’s best ever. Liu Kang snaps his fingers to create a black hole and allows it to drag his unfortunate enemy inside, piece by piece.
Mortal Kombat 1 teases a new character
In addition, the Mortal Kombat development chief, Ed Boon, has been having his fair share of fun on Twitter, teasing fans with a brand-new character in Mortal Kombat 1. Currently, we aren’t quite sure who this mysterious character is, with some fans suggesting that they’re the result of a create-to-character feature.
Mortal Kombat 1 is set to release for PC, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PS5 on September 19, 2023.
