Fans should brace for a bloodier version of the 2018’s summer movie when Meg 2: The Trench finally hits the cinemas later this year. Reports suggest that the imminent sequel is bringing a giant bloody shark back to the theaters and trying its luck to beat its first installment, which made more than $500 million worldwide.
While official details of Meg 2: The Trench remain scarce as of this writing, there have been claims that the sequel has been filmed already. So while you wait for the movie to swim to the big screens, here is everything we know so far about Meg 2.
Meg 2: The Trench Release Date: When Will Meg 2 Be Out?
Should things push through as planned, Meg 2: The Trench will be released in cinemas on August 4, 2023, around five years after the arrival of the first film. As per reports, the filming took place from February to May 2022.
Meg 2: The Trench Cast: Who Will Return For Meg 2?
Of course, Jason Statham will reprise his role as formerly-disgraced diver Jonas Taylor. However, his love interest will be missing since Li Bingbing is no longer making a comeback as Suyin in Meg 2: The Trench.
Other returning cast include Page Kennedy, Shuya Sophia Cai and Cliff Curtis as DJ, Meiying and James “Mac” Mackreides. Fans will also be meeting newcomers in Meg 2: The Trench such as Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels and Wu Jing, who remains the highest-grossing make actor of all time in China.
Jon Hoeber, Erich Hoeber and Dean Georgaris are also returning to write Meg 2: The Trench. Ben Wheatley took the helm of the forthcoming sequel.
Meg 2: The Trench Plot: Who Will Return For Meg 2?
An official synopsis for Meg 2: The Trench was released months ago, which confirmed the hints Director Wheatley dropped in 2021. The official plot read:
"Get ready for the ultimate adrenaline rush this summer in Meg 2: The Trench, a literally larger-than-life thrill ride that supersizes the 2018 blockbuster and takes the action to higher heights and even greater depths with multiple massive Megs and so much more! Dive into uncharted waters with Jason Statham and global action icon Wu Jing as they lead a daring research team on an exploratory dive into the deepest depths of the ocean. Their voyage spirals into chaos when a malevolent mining operation threatens their mission and forces them into a high-stakes battle for survival. Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse pounding race against time."
There have been reports that Meg 2: The Trench will likely adapt some elements from The Trench and Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, which is the basis of the first installment. However, it is also worth noting that the original film was not a faithful adaptation of Steven Alten’s novel as it featured a pregnant megalodon.
In the book sequel, Jonas is looking after the shark’s offspring, which has now grown to a giant size. It will lead to another battle between shark and man after Jonas turns to an eccentric billionaire for help.
