The Limited Edition console covers for Marvel's Spider-Man 2 featuring a symbiote takeover design inspired by the highly-anticipated game were made available for pre-orders, but if you're trying to get one, we have bad news for you: They're now sold out Friday just minutes after they became available to buy on PlayStation Direct's website and other retailers.
Customers trying to secure their order through the console's website were placed in a virtual queue with a notice that reads: "We're currently experiencing a large volume of customers to our site. We're working hard to get you in so you can place your pre-order for Spider-Man 2 Console Bundle, Dualsense Controller, and Console Covers."
The PlayStation Direct website limited one set of PS5 covers per household due to the huge demand, but pre-orders for the disc and disc-free console versions, which were both priced at $64.99, are now listed as "currently available". The pre-orders for the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 console cover are now listed as "sold out" at participating retailers, including Best Buy, GameStop, target, and Walmart.
At the time of this article's publication, other limited-edition items for the game, including the $599 Marvel's Spider-Man 2 console bundle and the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 DualSense Wireless Controller ($79.99), are still available for pre-order at the aforementioned retailers.
"I was there right on time and the console covers are sold out. That's pretty frustrating," one user, Chris Hill, tweeted at the official PlayStation account. "Why not just make enough so the fans can buy them?"
Insomniac Games said (via Culture Crave) that the limited-edition Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 covers are "not likely" to be restocked:
Jacinda Chew, Senior Art Director of Insomniac Games, talked about how the limited edition designs were inspired by Marvel's Spider-Man 2:
"The design was inspired by the in-game symbiote that's taking over the console and controller, but you can still see some of the underlying red under the tendrils. This represents the various ways players will experience the symbiote takeover in Marvel's Spider-Man 2. It's a constant push and pull for dominance whether it's internal or external and the outcome is not certain."
Hopefully, Sony and Insomniac Games will restock the limited-edition Marvel's Spider-Man 2 PS5 covers to combat the scalpers trying to make a profit from these items' high demand.
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is scheduled to release on October 20, 2023.
