Some new challenges are in store for Miles Morales and Peter Parker in the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game. The Insomniac game has easily become one of the much-anticipated and eagerly-awaited video games of the year and is almost two weeks away from its release. As the launch date approaches, more information about the game keeps coming up, including the two webslingers’ new personal challenges.
Marvel recently spoke to the Senior Creative Director of Insomniac Games, Bryan Intihar, and the Marvel Games VP and Creative Director Bill Rosemann. They shared what has happened to Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their separate games and why fans still resonate with their stories.
Intihar, while listing down some story campaign examples such as Miles attempting to write a college essay and Peter’s ongoing relationship with Mary-Jane Watson while also living in Aunt May’s house, said: "They have good days and bad days and strengths and weaknesses and real problems that we can all identify with and have struggles that we've all had in our lives.”
He further continues, “And then not only that, Peter now has his best friend coming back into his life with Harry, and he has his best friend who he grew up with, but then he has Miles. What's that like?" On top of this Roseman also labeled all the versions of the Spider-Man story, saying that "no matter how old the different Spider-Mans are, it's always a coming of age story at its heart."
Rosemann pointed out that the two characters have reached a point where they have to make decisions by themselves and own up to their choices. He said, "Well, there are moments in our lives when we have to leave the nest for whatever reason, and at that moment, we have to make decisions by ourselves. What we have from here, from the first game to this game, is—as they're all getting a bit older—the choices that they have to make are escalated."
Moreover, he also teased that these decisions are going to impact the characters in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, claiming that "they're all at a moment where they're making some really key choices and decisions, and that's just in their civilian life!"
During a recent Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 TV spot, we also got a glimpse of Peter and Miles' inner conflicts being paralleled with their dual high-stakes battle against Venom. Aside from Venom, the game will also feature the Lizard and Kraven the Hunter as the main antagonists. Both characters were also showcased in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation Showcase which was held back in May.
The gameplay trailers shared by Insomniac Games also gave us a look at the duo’s latest abilities, which range from symbiote suit powers to the use of web wings. It also highlighted Peter’s aggressive behavior and how much it has increased ever since the web-slinger came under the symbiote’s influence.
In addition to the new story and spider-powers, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 features a much larger map as compared to the previous game, allowing both Peter and Miles to traverse around Queens and Brooklyn on top of Manhattan. The upcoming game also boasts a unique "open world switching" feature, giving players the chance to "swap between Peter and Miles quite quickly" regardless of where they are in New York.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is set to launch on PlayStation 5 on October 20, 2023.
