Marvel: Kristen Stewart Reveals She Will Only Do a Superhero Movie with This Female Director

Kristen Stewart may find playing a superhero role a "nightmare," but she will be willing to do so if it will be directed by Greta Gerwig.

Fans have known Kristen Stewart for playing different roles since she started acting in the 2000s. Though she has become famous as a human-turned-vampire Bella Swan in the Twilight Saga, Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman, and Sabina Wilson in Charlie’s Angels, among many others, the actress has yet to play a superhero role. Though the idea makes her cringe, she will be willing to do a Marvel movie if she gets an invite from the Barbie director Greta Gerwig.

In an interview with the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Stewart revealed that she found playing a superhero role a “nightmare.” It might probably be the reason that despite being in the industry for decades, not to mention being a famous fancast for various superhero roles, she hadn’t done any Marvel or DC movies yet. However, this might change if Gerwig swayed her to do so.

“It sounds like a f*cking nightmare, actually,” she said. “But maybe the world changes. If Greta Gerwig asked me to do a Marvel movie, then I would do it.”

The 33-year-old then expressed her love for big movies, as she wanted people to watch them, especially if she were a part of these projects. However, she revealed the system needed to change, as what was currently happening was following this “algorithmic,” which she called a weird experience that no one couldn’t feel personal about.

Will Kristen Stewart play a Marvel superhero role?

So far, there are no words if Stewart will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or play a role in a Marvel movie. However, back in 2019, she revealed she wanted to play a gay superhero in the franchise. The idea came when someone told her that she might end up doing a Marvel movie if she didn’t hold her girlfriend’s hand in public.

“That’s been a conversation that’s always existed,” she told Variety. “I’ve always radically rejected it.”

She then explained that she only referenced Marvel because of a “big conglomerate-y type thing,” adding the studio would surely love to hire gay kids to be superheroes instead of her. But as she was sitting next to Anthony Mackie, who played Falcon in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the actor was asked what superhero role Stewart should play at the time.

“A gay one!” Stewart injected and made a superhero pose when Mackie suggested she should be a gay female Falcon Captain America.

Will Greta Gerwig Direct a Marvel movie?

Gerwig recently made waves after directing the first live-action Barbie movie in 2023. She’s also known for helming films like Little Women and Lady Bird. However, as she has yet to direct a Marvel movie or any superhero films, she told Rolling Stone last year that she would be open to it when she found the source material and story appealing.

“It would have to be something I had a feeling for and a relationship to,” she explained. “A well-shot, well-executed action movie is just incredible. It's a dance. I've never done anything like that.”

Gerwig continued that there are films she wants to do that require “a big canvas” and knows many directors who have done superhero films, like Chloe Zhao (Eternals) and Chris Nolan (the Dark Knight trilogy). That said, she expressed her interest in playing in “lots of different worlds,” which she called her goal.
