The Harry Potter novel and movie series is one of the most successful franchises there is, resulting in numerous derivative works, from a traveling exhibition to theme attractions to spin-off movies and more. But if there’s one thing fans didn’t see coming, it’s a TV reboot on Max. Despite the clamor, considering the eight-part film has said it all, executive producer David Heyman promised it would delve deeper into the book series.

Based on the fantasy series novel by J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter tells the story of the young wizard Harry Potter as he faces the dark wizard Lord Voldemort with the help of his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. It was adapted into a movie series of the same name by Warner Bros., making the franchise one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. Come April this year, Warner Bros. Discover announced the coming of the Harry Potter TV reboot. So, here’s everything you need to know about the new series.

What is the Harry Potter TV reboot about?

Like its movie adaptation, the Harry Potter TV reboot will be based on Rowling’s novels. However, the show will only have seven seasons compared to the film series, which was divided into eight parts.

Of course, it will follow Harry’s story in the wizarding world, starting as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and becoming the hero no one expects him to be. With the help of Hermione and Ron, they will fight Lord Voldemort and his group of Death Eaters for peace and justice.

Will the Harry Potter TV reboot be different from the movies?

In a statement, HBO and Max Content Chairman and CEO Casey Bloys revealed the Harry Potter TV reboot would allow viewers to discover Hogwarts in a “whole new way.” As the Wizarding World is said to be continuously evolving, the new show will give fans fresh and exciting ways to engage.

Heyman recently told Total Film that the new show would “explore the books more deeply.” With its “dive deep” into its source material, staying faithful to the original story, Rowling, who would work with Warner Bros. Television to make this TV adaptation, claimed Max promised to preserve the integrity of her books.

“I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series,” she added.

Will Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson return to the Harry Potter TV reboot?

Sadly, the new Harry Potter TV won’t see the return of the original cast members Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson. According to reports, it will feature an all-new cast. Though no official casting has been made yet, entertainment insider Jeff Sneider said on The Hot Mic podcast that there’s a “concerted effort” to cast “more people of color” in the series.

There are even rumors that a major character change may happen to Hermione. And if fans can have their way, they want Adam Driver to play the role of Severus Snape and Tom Felton, who portrayed Draco in the movie series, as Lucius Malfoy.

When will the Harry Potter TV reboot be released?

So far, there are no words yet on when the Harry Potter TV reboot will be released. Heyman revealed the series is still in its early days, and they haven’t hired a writer to start writing its script.

“It's a bit early,” he said.
