Diablo 4 is an RPG game in which the fun never ends, and new things are constantly added to keep the players hooked. With the Season of the Malignant about to release and brand-new gameplay incoming, it doesn’t look like Blizzard has any plans of slowing down anytime soon. However, there is one system whose arrival fans have been eagerly waiting to see in the game: competitive play.
Recently, we heard some news regarding this feature from Joseph Piepiora, Diablo 4’s associate director. He confirmed that Diablo 4 will, in fact, receive competitive play, but fans might have to wait quite some time before it is added to the game. He mentioned, “We have plans for this that we want to bring online in Season 3,” and continued on to say, “It is expansive [and] we want to make sure that we do it correctly.”
In addition to this, Piepora also shared that the Diablo 4 development team is busy discussing competitive play with competitive players and content creators. He explained this was necessary “to get a general sense of the sorts of things they’d be looking for in such a feature.”
In Diablo 2, players were required to create a new character to establish themselves on the ladder. Players playing in this closed realm are not allowed to interact with non-ladder characters to encourage more cooperative gameplay. Every time the ladder was reset, new players would have the chance to mark themselves on the leaderboard.
Currently, we have no idea how the competitive system in Diablo 4 would play out. It is possible that it might function similarly to the traditional ladder climb system, in which players try their best to earn their spot on the leaderboard. However, right now, we can just familiarize ourselves with the Season of the Malignant and explore all of its features, which will release in all regions on July 20, 2023.
