'Culinary Class Wars' Chefs Napoli Matfia And Edward Lee to Appear in 'You Quiz on The Block'

The two Culinary Class Wars grand finalists, Kwon Sung-jun and Edward Lee, will make their appearance on October 16.

Culinary Class Wars contestants Kwon Sung-jun (a.k.a. Napoli Matfia) and Edward Lee are set to appear on an upcoming episode of You Quiz on the Block show. On Wednesday, the official Instagram account of tvN's You Quiz on the Block has announced that they will guest in the variety show while a sharing a photo of the two chefs, writing, “An ‘equally exciting’ filming of ‘You Quiz!’ Catch Edward Lee and Napoli Matfia on the show on Wednesday, October 16.”

The announcement comes just a day after the final two episodes of Culinary Class Wars aired on Netflix on October 8, which saw the two chefs going head-to-head in the cooking show's grand final. The South Korean survival show, which consisted of 12 episodes, gathered 100 chefs for an intense culinary showdown, where the lesser-known "Black Spoon" underdog chefs went to compete against Korea's high-powered "White Spoon" chefs, all competing for a grand prize of 300 million won (approximately $223,000).

Who won Culinary Class Wars?

In the eleventh episode, Korean American celebrity chef Edward Lee survived the intense Infinite Cooking Hell challenge, where he and six other semi-finalists competed to make dishes with the tofu ingredient. Lee proved his impressive culinary knowledge by creating a variety of unique dishes that gave him the edge to survive all the rounds in order to qualify in the grand final against Kwon, who automatically made it to Top 2 after winning the challenge in Episode 10 where chefs were challenged to create a dish that best represented themselves. He created a pasta dish that infused his great-grandmother’s crab soup.

The twelfth and final episode, which was set a day after the previous round's challenges, featured the final two chefs competing for the grand prize. Their mission was to create a dish that they can stake their name on. The two judges, Paik Jong-won and Ahn Sung-jae, will have to make a unanimous decision or they will have to do a rematch until they can both agree on a winner.

Lee deconstructed tteokbokki (rice cake) reimagined as dessert, served with makgeolli (Korean rice wine) infused with water celery and Korean melon. He told the judges that the dish was inspired by the leftover tteokbokki served in Korean restaurants. It was dish that truly showed his love for his country despite spending most of his life in the United States.

Meanwhile, Kwon cooked a lamb and pistachio dish served with Piedmont-style Barolo sauce, a raviolo stuffed with lamb's heart, deep-fried morel mushrooms, sage, black truffle shavings, and lamb shoulder rack, dyed red with beet. Kwon explained that he added the Barolo vintage wine because it was made in 1995, his birth-year. "I wanted to symbolically infuse the sauce with my life energy," he told the judges.

Ultimately, Kwon Sung-jun "Napoli Maftia" won the grand prize, and the decision was made after the two judges reached an unanimous decision.
