Benedict Cumberbatch is officially returning as the Sorcerer Supreme next year. The Spider-Man: No Way Home star confirmed he will be back as Doctor Strange in 2024 for a new Marvel Cinematic Universe production.
2021 was a big year for Benedict Cumberbatch as he worked on the third Spider-Man movie before starring in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the following year. However, the Sherlock actor would later express his intent to take a break from acting, leading to concerns about his character's future in the MCU.
Luckily, Cumberbatch has confirmed that his hiatus is almost over. As per The Direct, the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy star confirmed that he would be returning as Doctor Stephen Strange in 2024 to film scenes for "some Marvel capers in the making." Although the new project was not revealed, there are speculations that Cumberbatch will be working on the third Doctor Strange movie.
Benedict Cumberbatch had previously stated that he would "love to do another one" when asked about the possibility of Doctor Strange 3. The Avengers: Infinity War actor pointed out that there is "so much more to explore" with the Sorcerer Supreme and his story in the MCU.
But what can we expect in a possible Doctor Strange 3? The previous movie alluded to the idea of Cumberbatch's character working with an unexpected ally. In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Strange met the mysterious Clea, who is played by none other than Charlize Theron herself. Theron's appearance in the sequel led to speculations that bigger threats are coming in a potential third movie.
For now, it has not yet been confirmed whether there will be a third Doctor Strange movie. In addition to that, Benedict Cumberbatch's 2024 MCU project has not yet been revealed. However, we're looking forward to new updates in the next few weeks.
