Aside from Eren Yeager appearing in Fortnite, the beloved Attack on Titan franchise hasn’t been featured in the video game universe ever since the release of a couple of mobile games in 2020 and 2021. Considering the franchise’s popularity and the way the anime concluded earlier this month, it comes as a surprise to many fans that the franchise hasn’t been seen in the gaming space.
However, one particular fan has created their own Attack on Titan fan game, putting players in their own set of ODM gear and allowing them to defeat Titans with their friends. The game was released on YouTube by Swammy, a game developer currently working on Mecha Attack. They’ve gained a significant following on YouTube by creating a wide range of fan games over the years.
The free Attack on Titan video game isn’t the first we’ve seen of Swammy when it comes to the franchise. In the past, they have launched some other versions, but the most recent update completely reworks the game with the help of Unreal Engine 5. Not only this, but this is only the first update of many that Swammy is planning on releasing, so fans can expect this project to be a real deal with time.
The Attack on Titan fan game reworks plenty of elements and features that players were disappointed with in the previous version, with the main one being the ODM gear. It has now been upgraded and improved to make the feature a lot more life-like, meaning your grapple hook is now entirely based on physics, so you’ll be able to swing through levels more naturally.
Swammy has also greatly improved the multiplayer mode by adding a lobby system that utilizes Epic Games’ servers. Since it’s still in its early stages, Swammy has said to expect some issues that might have been skipped while the game was in development. With that being said, this is only the first “four of five” updates that will eventually be released, without any word on exactly when that might be.
However, Swammy wants to give the community a chance to truly explore the deepest corners of the game so they can address any issues instantly. On the other hand, the single-player content is good to go and should be quite stable. The mode also features a greatly improved Titan AI, making the whole experience look a lot more dangerous. Considering what Swammy has brought forth with the game, we can surely manage hard drive space and time.
What’s in store for the Attack on Titan anime?
The Attack on Titan anime officially concluded its final season on November 5, and currently, we have no idea if anything else might be on the way. The original manga's creator, Hajime Isayama, has previously stated that he won’t make any more Attack on Titan manga in the future, and the anime finale also didn’t tease any further surprises.
Nevertheless, Attack on Titan still remains one of the most famous franchises when it comes to both manga and anime. It won’t come as a shock to anyone if the anime goes on with a spin-off at some point in the future. Moreover, the video game world seems ready for more adaptations, especially considering how popular Eren Yeager’s appearance in Fortnite was at the beginning of this year.
